April 2019 - Passive Income

April 2019 Passive Income Update

May 1st already?

Is it just me that feels like the older I get the faster time goes by?

April was a fantastic month.

I got the yard all ready for the season – Weeding, mulching, pruning, edging, fertilizing, aerating and even got one cut in already. The last week has been cold though, so the grass stopped growing. We have gotten a tonne of rain here but nothing like up north or in Ottawa. I Hope none of you are experiencing any of those floods.

My son has taken a interest in road hockey, (finally!) so we have been playing on the driveway quite a bit and kicking the ball around the backyard as well. It feels good to be back outside after what felt like a long winter.

Our daughter is flying around now. So it should be a great summer now that we don’t need to worry about her crawling over dog poop in the yard or what not.

I got a new car this month and absolutely love it… Sometimes we try to keep a car up and running, but it sure feels good driving in a newer/safer/better looking car. =)

Now let’s check out these totals!

Raises or Cuts
  • Proctor and Gamble raised their dividend by 4%. This adds $2.75 to our forward income.
  • IBM raised their dividend by 3.2% adding $3.60 to our forward income.

Total Added Income from Dividend Raises so far in 2019 – $137.89

April 2019 Passive Income

Wow over 38% growth rate? I knew it would be good but that’s really nice. With all the new buys Id like to do in the coming months, (telus/bell/nutrien) I can see these month’s becoming our highest in the future.

Other Income

Private Investment Payment – $500.00

Nothing new here, just our regular monthly payment. (I don’t even have to edit this part every month) Steady Eddy…….

Solar Income

In March (We always get paid a month later) our solar panel system generated 695 kWh. Since we bring in a fixed rate of 28.8 cents per kilowatt hour, Hydro One deposited $200.16 into our chequing account this month. Not bad, Its nice to see these winter months pass and the sun come out! Total Income for 2019 so far – $406.07

System Installed January 2018

Total System Cost ——–$32,396.46

Total Income Received ——–$2,922.03

Amount to Breakeven —- $29,474.43

April 2019 Passive Income

Total April 2019 Passive Income – $1188.27

Total Passive Income Increase over last year. – $50

Not a massive increase overall in the grand scheme of things. Solar was down $87 compared to last April. I saw this coming because last march was nice. Meanwhile we were still getting snow this year. Also the sales for purchasing 2 cars in the last 7 months was bound to hurt…….

Totals For 2019

Dividends Year To Date Total – $1,917.3
Other Passive Income Year to date – $2,960.66
Total Passive Income for 2019 —– $4,877.96
Year End Goal – $15,500 ——– %31.47

March 2019 Purchases/ Sales

To buy our new car I decided to sell our positions in both Shaw and Russell Metals. This lost us $446.94 in forward dividend income. A huge blow, but its better than car payments. Also I want to focus more on Dividend Growth Stocks and these 2 aren’t them.

We also started a position in 3m by buying 6 shares. This is a long term hold and a solid dividend growth stock having raised its dividend over 60 years. I’ll be adding to this position in the coming months if the price drops or stays sideways. This added $34.56 in forward income.

Goals Update
  • I want to read 10 books this year. I finished that real estate book and started reading the compounding effect this month. 2/10 all yr.
  • Get A Will – DONE. You can read about that here.
  • Picked up some Garbage – Grabbed some while hiking or walking dog. Haven’t made a trip out of it though. Ie just go to beach etc to pick up garbage for a hour or 2.
  • Charities – Committed to donating $50 a month to The Nature Conservancy of Canada.
  • Increase Dividends by $1,100 this year. With New Purchases, Drips and Dividend Raises this month we added $57.54 to our dividend Portfolio. So far in 2019 we have added $429.65. %39.05 of our goal. (Lost $446.94 on sale for car, but want to keep this separate)
  • Reduce Screen Time before Bed – Failed big time! I might of read a bit some nights before bed but that phone always comes out…..
Conclusion

Overall a great month. I love finally seeing that BNS drip as I’ve been slowing working on that position. Numbers are a little mucked up with all these sales the last year, but moving forward things should be a lot cleaner in that regard. The Shaw sale is going to hurt these totals moving forward though.

How about this last season of Game of Thrones? My wife’s really into it, but I have never been. (and have no clue whats going on.) This season I have been watching it with her for the final battles. (Lord of the rings style) Got to say I’m pretty impressed! Looking forward to the final 3 episodes..

Well that’s it for our April 2019 Passive Income update.

How was your month?

Wish you all the best, Cheers!

  1. Congrats on another solid month (as usual). I see your drawing skills have improved..good work 😛

My wife and I love GoT and have been watching since Seaason 1 (one of the few shows we both like and watch together)- the last 3 episodes should be awesome.
That’s a lot of DRIPS too man…Very nice (in Borat voice)

    • Rob says:

      haha love the Borat comment.

Thanks man. My son always wants to draw and color so might as well do something up for the site!

      cheers Jordan

  2. DivvyDad says:

Very nice month all around, and great to see that solar income starting to go up as that means warmer, sunny weather! The loss of forward income will be a short-term sting but I agree that is much better than taking on a car payment. Re: GoT, I have never invested time into it and don’t really feel like I am missing anything. All I can think about is if it will hurt HBO subscriber numbers after it is over and thus have an impact to T. Lol.

    • Rob says:

      haha dd

I think it definately will. I know a bunch of ppl who subscribe to crave for the hbo just for got. Its not cheap at 30$ a month.

I have always thought of T but think vz is the better bet. Lower debt and they arent going to compete with disney and netflix streaming.

      But yeah i agree
      Summers coming!

      cheers man

      • DivvyDad says:

I do agree with you re: VZ and T and have been patiently waiting for VZ to reach my desired price point so I can add more to my position.

  3. Sweet! Another great month for passive income! 🙂 Congrats PCI! Definitely liking the 38% YOY growth! Keep up the great work! 🙂

  4. Hi Rob,

My wife and I are huge GoT fans since the beginning. We’re so happy that the final season has finally started. However, it’s also kind of sad, as there are only 3 episodes left and then it’s all over. But at least I’ve heard that they plan on doing one or more GoT spin-offs…

Congrats to a fantastic month! The YoY increase in dividend income is really impressive!

    Best wishes from Germany

    – David

    • Rob says:

      hey David

Nice to hear about the spinoffs. Im sure my wife and a lot of other fans would love that. Im sure hbo will do what they can to keep the series around.

Thanks about the income, got to love seeing high growth numbers like last.month.

      cheers Man

  5. I’m a GoT fan but have mixed feelings on the last episode. There was a lot of build-up for the white walker battle and now that it’s over, I’m not as interested in watching the rest. Cersei will lose and I don’t care who sits on the Throne afterwards… but I do care on building up a dividend portfolio that can last through a long winter. Recently I’ve started looking into ABBV and CVS. The long-term risk-to-reward on both is looking pretty good.

    • Rob says:

      hey Frugal

haha it was a good fight but Im so out of the loop on got that I dont even know who Cersei is. haha.

Abbvie and cvs both look good and abbvies pipeline of drugs is slowly getting approval which should be good for the future.

      cheers man

  6. Rob –

Real solid, overall. You are staying active and trying to keep yourself in a great position. Further, the income streams are diversified and is amazing. Can’t wait to see what your full year will look like.

  7. John says:

    Hey Rob,

Looks like a pretty great month on the income side. I also got a first ever DRIP of TD, which feels amazing as this is a probably my most pre-eminent core position. Also got first dividends from new holdings TRP and IPL. I might add to TRP in the next little while as the market apparently did not really like their most recent report (despite rising cashflows, income and profits).

    Enjoy the spring weather!

    John

    • Rob says:

      hey John

Love it man. Congrats to you as well. Nice positions you got there.

I may look into trp as its one id eventually like to add to the portfolio. Love the pipelines, such a good moat.

Oil stocks have taken a beating lately, might be worth taking another stake in. Buffet seems to be loading up.

      cheers John!

  8. Rob,

Nice month here! I like your progress a lot. The dividend income is coming along great and the solar income is starting to hum along. Over $1,000 in passive income this month….EXCELLENT!

    Bert

    • Rob says:

      hey Bert

Thanks man, yeah got to love these over 1k months! Now to get our dividends to that level. Slowly but surely.
      cheers mate.

  9. Brian says:

Another great month Rob, well done my friend. I really wish Alberta would allow residents to sell back to the grid, maybe next year.

    See you next month.

    • Rob says:

      hey Brian

Yeah for sure! Although I think Alberta would be the last province wanting to “go Green”. Got to push that oil..

Got to check out your update.
      cheers Brian!

  10. German says:

Very solid growth, I must say, even after some stock sales to buy 2 cars. Although, the sale of Shaw will affect your dividend income later on. But that’s ok. You get to enjoy the newer car. I’m sure you will catch up with stocks later on. As for the solar, it sucks that snow has the power to affect the generation of energy. Something has to be invented so the snow doesn’t accumulate on solar panels. Or maybe use the leaf blower whenever possible to blow of that snow. What’s on your buy list for May?

    • Rob says:

      hey German

There is becoming more and more better prices this day. More mmm telus or new positions in nutrien or bell?

Its also all the clouds the winter gloom brings. The sun is shining today though.

      cheers German

  11. Doug says:

Good job. Dividends are good passive income is great getting more drips. Keep it up.

  12. Probably good that you got some showers in April, otherwise how’s it going to rain money! (Just like in the drawing).
Great growth this month, pushing 40%.
I noticed no CSCO drip this time around. Share price must have moved up beyond the dividend payment. Not a bad problem to have. 😀
Glad to hear you are enjoying the new car, too.

    • Rob says:

      hey Paul

Good Point. Hope you like the drawing.

Cisco has been on an absolute tear. It keeps going and going. They are definately my best stock in regards to share price growth.

      cheers man!
