Goals for 2020 – Do It

Goals for 2020

Goals for 2020

A little late this month but these are our goals for 2020. We did alright on achieving our goals for 2019, but failed in some categories. Financially things got messed up with some sales, but I don’t see that happening this year. The momentum should grow quicker this year.

My biggest goal this year will be to tighten up, physically. Love handles are alright and I rock a mean dad bod but I’m currently 206 lbs and haven’t worked out for quite some time. Being a dad is time consuming but I’m sure I can carve out half hour here and there to improve in this regard.

Anyways let’s get to the goals.

Financial

Dividends – Our year end forward income in dividend’s last year was 5,786.58. My goal this year is to bump this up to $7,500. A 22.85% increase or $1,713.42‬. Last year we increased that income $459.02 from dividend raises and Drips. While that number should be slightly higher this year as the portfolio is larger based on that figure we would need $1,254.40 from new investments. Roughly $100 a month. This may be hard as I don’t want to focus on yield, but I think it can be done.

Etf – A goal I already started to achieve was opening an account with questrade to get a ex Canada etf. Questrade offers basically free etf purchases, which is really nice. My goal is to start a position in xaw.to and contribute $250 a month to it moving forward. This is a fantastic way to further help diversify the portfolio.

This month I already did this and you can read about it here. We deployed $1,000 to get the ball rolling.

Giving – We want to continue to give to charity’s. Last year we signed up to contribute 50 bucks a month to the nature conservatory of Canada. We will continue to do this, but we are debating increasing this to 75 a month or donating 25 to a different Charity that my wife feels strongly about.

Physical

Like I Mentioned earlier, this may be my #1 goal for 2020. I used to workout a lot and have a bench, dumbbells and pull-up bar in the garage. Unfortunately its basically been collecting dust for the last 2 years. I really enjoy kayaking too, so we have been looking for a good rowing machine as I think I would use this a tonne for cardio.

180 lbs – Anyways I’m currently 200 lbs, while I have a big build. There’s fat there for sure. It’s time to commit the time to improve in this regard. I will work out 2-3 times a week and my goal is to get down to 180 again by the end of the year. It’s been a long time since 180. I’m not aiming for ripped abs or anything, I still love to crush a couple cans from time to time! Just tighten up and beef up these man boobs. haha!

Diet – My weakness, carbs, cookies, gummies, late night snacks. I need to cut back on my late night snacks and possibly cut back on my carbs. One thing I started doing in December is having meat free nights. There are a lot of documentary’s on netflix about meat based protein. The environmental impacts and also the effects on the body.

I’m no chef to be honest. I can do a good bbq and throw on some Montreal steak spice, grill some veggies and cook a mean pot of rice in the rice cooker.

I really want to improve here and having been busting out some nice curry dishes, which the kids hate but me and the wife love. My goal for 2020 is to improve my cooking skills and have at least 1 night a week of plant based protein meals instead of meat. If you got some god recipes please let me know.

Life

Reading – I failed on this category last year. I wanted to read 10 but only read 7. Seven books is still great. This year my goal is to read 3 books I would normally not consider. I’m a big fan of Bill Gates and he always recommends some good reads that I surely wouldn’t pick off the shelves. It’s time to expand my mind into areas I wouldn’t normally consider. One book really stands out that I think would be great. Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. You can read gates notes about it here.

Garbage – Another Goal from 2019 was to pick up garbage. We did it while walking the dog but never went out of our way to do it. This year I want to go out at least 3 times purely for this. Drive to a beach, skip some rocks and grab a bag or two of garbage. There is always a lot of crap at beaches. Maybe park on the side of the road and clean up all the litter people throw while driving. Remember – Noone Likes A Litter Bug.

    Hey Rob,

Some very good goals you have there, and I wish you nothing but the best in hope you achieve them! You got my support 🙂

One of my financial goals is to get my dividend income for 2020 as close as possible to $6,500 (finished 2019 just under $4200).

I’m in the middle of my first month of blogging, so looking to build on this. I’m also in my first year as a Tech YouTuber, looking to build on this as well. 1000 subs by the end of the year?

Continue my routine of working out and making sure I don’t lose sight of this.

      thanks dgx

Sounds like some fantastic goals. 50% plus in dividend growth sounds amazing. I keep debating starting a youtube channel, my Boy German has been tearing it up on there. =) Best of luck man, lets do this!
      cheers

  2. Hey Rob, you have listed some great goals for this year. I bet through the drip and dividend raises you receive this year you may hit $600 this year. Your life and physical goals look good as well. I have every confidence that 2020 will be a successful year for you. I look forward to tracking your progress throughout the year.

    • Rob says:

      hey Matt

Here’s hoping! Cu started me off behind a bit haha, but id love to see 600 this year. Thanks for the kind words. I look forward to seeing how things go in 2020.
      cheers man

    • Terry says:

Good goals for the year, however I do feel that the charitable gift amount could go up considerably. I am a dividend investor too, and maybe I have a different life focus, but my charitable giving usually ends up closer to 8-10% of net income. I belong to a church and have a great relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ, and this is a very compelling action in my life. I believe that I must save, invest, and be good with money, however, I also want to store my treasure in heaven rather than on earth, that is why I sacrifice so much. After all, it’s all His anyhow, He just allows me to steward it while I’m on this planet.. God Bless,
      Terry

      • Rob says:

        hey Terry

thanks man. I’m not a big religion guy but I hear ya. The tithe is a big one in the church’s.

I rather put my money towards other causes but plan to increase the giving. 10% is massive and surely can do alot of good. Nice work!

One day it may be that large but slowly but surely those contributions of ours will grow.

It truly does feel great to give.
        cheers Terry

  3. You set up some nice goals for 2020! I have no doubt you will hit all of them. I set the highest bar at breaking $11K in forward dividend income in 2020. We will see what happens. Looking forward to this new year! Best of luck to you! 🙂

    • Rob says:

Pffft man 11k is easy for you! You got that for sure. Your dividend raises alone may get ya to $10,500. I think this year you will blow yourself away. Your progress has been fantastic.

I look forward to watching you fly by that target.
      cheers

  4. PCI –

Excited for the diet and fitness goals. Keep us up to date with your meals and how you incorporate protein in the diet, for sure.

    -Lanny

    • Rob says:

haha well tonight I forgot to put meat out to defrost and made grilled cheese… lol I added salami in mine for protein… haha. We also had a salad, so there’s that. 2020 I will be better =)
      cheers Lanny

  5. Chris says:

Some nice goals you got there. I went on Keto diet and lost 45 pounds in 2 years. I source my fat from avocado and olive oil as opposed to meat products though.

    Good luck!

    • Rob says:

wow Chris congrats man. That’s awesome. Thanks for the tip. I think if i cut carbs id cut pretty fast, but beer is a killer at the moment. Maybe make the switch to rum n cokes =)
Are you at your goal already? Do you feel a lot better on keto? Lots of people love it.

      cheers

      • Chris says:

Thanks! If you cut down your carbs and sugar intake, you will lose weight for sure as I have. I would like to lose another 5 pounds. I also bike to and from work every day weather permitting. Definitely less brain fog when you cut down on carbs.

On a different note, what’s your take on getting an investment loan (i.e. HELOC) to earn the spread between the carrying cost and dividend yield?

        • Rob says:

          hey Chris

appreciate it. Yeah got to start biking more.

We did a heloc kind of when we got all these investments going.

We refinanced actually to a cheaper mortgage rate and pulled some equity out. That really helped get the momentum going. used all that money for solar panels, private investment and threw the rest into the market.

obviously there is risk there. if the market crashes short term that would suck. Long term it would be good most likely. Everyone is different, depends on your risk tolerance.

          lmk what you decide.
          cheers Chris!

          • Chris says:

            Hello Rob,
I already had a new self directed account and HELOC set up. From the market trends, I’m suspecting we’re at the latter stages of the credit market cycle which can result to a huge correction. To minimize the risks, I would like to get a favorable entry point if possible. In short, I will be ready to pounce in the next market downturn. I already have a good chunk of our own money invested in dividend stocks. Investing on margin will just a little bit of a boost to secure my early retirement (fingers crossed).

            cheers

          • Rob says:

I think your right Chris. Credit may not be as easy to get soon enough. Wish you all the best on these moves.
            cheers

  6. Wally says:

Looks like a great list of goals! I like how you have gone beyond financial goals. I’ve created some goals in various areas of my life (e.g., fitness, relationships, etc.), but only post the financial ones on my blog. Maybe I’ll expand it sometime in the future. Best of luck achieving these goals in 2020!

    • Rob says:

      Hey Wally!
For sure, honestly finances start to become auto pilot. Sure its nice to set targets, but financially speaking I think in the future we will be ok if we just keep doing what we are doing. Its other parts of my life that I need to focus on more. ie diet and exercise, giving etc.

Posting it here really keeps me inspired since I need to do these monthly updates. Which is fantastic.
Wish you all the best on your goals too Alex.
      cheers

    • Rob says:

      hey P

thanks, no question I got alot of work to do on the health front. Diet is a massive one….

let’s see how 2020 goes. nice buy with bpy too

      cheers!

It’s important to set personal goals apart from financials. My husband rocks a “dad bod” also and I don’t have a problem with it. I wish we lived close enough to the beach, I would be happy to do clean up a couple of hours a week.

Looking forward to a fabulous year!

    • Rob says:

      haha Michelle.

The dad bod really ain’t that bad. The wife likes it but would she like it more if I was cut around the waist? Haha I think so.

We dont live that close but it’s always nice to make a day of it. The kids love it, and dad always makes the best sandcastles. =)

cheers and welcome to the site Michelle.

  9. DivvyDad says:

You’ve got a nice collection of goals covering all areas. Look forward to hearing if you get a rower, as I’ve been contemplating that as well. I’d love to get a Hydrow (kind of the Peloton of rowers) but I just cannot bring myself to pay that price for a rower.

For the reading, you might be interested in checking Barack Obama’s list of the best books he read in 2019. He also has a quite diverse genre of books and there might be something of interest in there.

    • Rob says:

      hey dd

thanks man. long time hows things?

Yeah that has been what has stopped me from purchasing one so far. Rowers tell me the concepts are the best but cost over 1k used, so im waiting to find a steal. Is your rower a water one?

I will look into Barack’s list as well for sure then. never knew he had a reading list.
all the best in 2020 man
      cheers

  10. Love that your goals are not just all financial based. It’s easy to get caught up in the dollars and numbers but there’s more to life.

When hubby wanted to lose weight we just made a few lifestyle changes that made a huge difference. Slow and steady always wins the race.

I’ve never thought of picking up garbage as a goal. I’m definitely going to try to be more mindful of this going forward.

    • Rob says:

      hey Maria

Thanks, yeah little switches in the diet should really improve things. Garbage is a big issue these days and just looks ugly. It doesn’t take much to bring a bag with you on a walk and make the place nicer than when you came. Feels good too!
      Cheers Maria

  11. German says:

What keeps my weight in check is skipping breakfast or any other meal if I am NOT hungry. I rarely eat in the morning unless I really feel for it.

    • Rob says:

      hey German

the great debate… is breakfast really the most important meal of the day??
during weekends its always me and my honey nut cheerios but i have debated it. Maybe a banana and coffee to go

Id love to Hear What You Think
